Spot-on! I would like to extend your thoughts on that missing DESIRE.

For me, scouting was always also a framework of motivation. Motivation to do stuff, motivation to oppose against stuff, even to lead a revolution. A lot of times it was motivation to do stuff i really didn’t like to do but i wished to meet my responsibilities and so i did stuff nonetheless, sometimes i did better, sometimes i did worse. Anyhow there was always a lot to reflect on. I challenged myself, took over control and learned about my laziness and anxieties.

I totally agree with you, NOT providing the answer – think: not motivating others – but providing a framework, which inspires people to find their own motivators and to reflect on them deliberately – that is what influences one’s life long term.

Comment on Be Prepared – Scouts and AI by rstinghe http://radu.ch/be-prepared-scouts-and-ai/#comment-180 Thu, 09 Mar 2017 18:15:34 +0000 http://radu.ch/?p=1430#comment-180 Derek, thank you for taking the time to read the post and comment. I agree that in order to create a better world we need more than just educate people (regardless of how relevant that education is). I take the view that, in order to achieve this, we need a combination of three factors: positive values, leadership skills and a system to help young people collect data, form a view of the world and make informed decisions accordingly. You can see an elaboration of these point in another blog entry here: http://radu.ch/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-what-does-it-take-to-change-the-world/

Comment on Be Prepared – Scouts and AI by Derek Pollard http://radu.ch/be-prepared-scouts-and-ai/#comment-179 Sun, 05 Mar 2017 20:50:48 +0000 http://radu.ch/?p=1430#comment-179 Radu – your article is a valuable synthesis of many factors which deserve more consideration than is possible in a brief comment, and I applaud the general direction of your thinking, and particularly the importance of reflection in the self-education process. However I suggest in defining Scouting as education for life it does not contain a sufficient consideration of the need for that education to include the development of a set of personal values to support RESPONSIBLE active citizenship in the society you point to. As you say Scouting seeks to empower young people not just to be happy and personally fulfilled, but to influence their communities for good through their actions – a process which for short we call ‘leadership’ ? How do we develop that in response to your set of trends ?

Comment on The Age of Controversy by Adrian http://radu.ch/the-age-of-controversy/#comment-175 Wed, 09 Mar 2016 08:15:02 +0000 http://radu.ch/?p=950#comment-175 I’ll add my two cents here, trying to mix water and oil simply doesn’t work, however they can coexist without any issues. But the laws of physics states that oil must stay on top of the water. And here comes Shakespeare: “There Is nothing either good or bad but Thinking Makes It So””

Otherwise well expressed opinion, you should keep writing…
